Announcing Residence.
A space to explore, create, collaborate and produce.
Hello,
I’m thrilled to announce a new project - Residence.
Residence reinterprets the artist-in-residence model for the digital space. It provides a focused environment for artists to experiment, engage, exchange ideas and concentrate on new work.
How it works:
Residence will feature two artists over the course of 2026 developing new work, documented here for everyone to follow the journey. Each artist will produce four works throughout the course of their residency. While the first three works will be substantial, they are also a means to shape the focus and direction for the final work - a longform piece or a suite. Each artist will use their time to work independently, in new collaborations or with the other artist resident, weaving new threads into their work.
Each artist will offer rolling insights on their process, current inspirations, playlists, maybe even sketches or fragments of their work through this Substack.
All works created through Residence will be shared through Bandcamp, with streaming options left to the artists’ discretion. Each work will have its own price point, set by the artist based on the nature and scale of the release. A low-cost subscription will also be available, offering access to all works but also to function as a patronage model to support the artists and the project as a whole.
Residence will begin in early February 2026, running until late October 2026. We’ll remind you about it in January when we share the Bandcamp page and offer a subscriber-exclusive collaborative piece from the artists. We may also have some guests along the way.
The Residence 2026 artists:
The artists for Residence 2026 are Cole Pulice and whait, aka more eaze (Mari Maurice Rubio) and Wendy Eisenberg.
Residence came to me as a way to work again with people who struck me deeply with their open spirit and energy while creating their piece for Longform Editions. The initial idea came to me while listening to more eaze’s Eternity. I have pored over the broad more eaze catalogue and been both marvelled and tickled by Mari’s sense of invention. I had a thought to be involved more deeply within that and with Mari herself considering our previous correspsondence. In our first conversation about Residence, I asked why someone so prolific would need a singular space like this. She told me what I understood to be their artist dilemma - even though Mari is always composing and producing, the outlet is never guaranteed. Something like Residence affords her the drive to direct her explorations, knowing they will have a home. More recently, Mari proposed the idea that Wendy Eisenberg join her in their guise together as whait, to broaden the scope of possibilities and further their artistic partnership through the aims of Residence. You may recall whait’s Close Quarters was part of the final set of Longform Editions works.
From Wendy:
”Whait is a romantic, domestic band made of Mari and myself and, in the spirit of the age, we are conceiving of this residency as us ‘looking for a third’. We will use this lush opportunity to release the compositions we write when we play together on our freer evenings, and will invite collaborators (our ‘thirds’) into the warmth and loving space of the home studio. Our goal is to share with the world a taste of what we do most nights: improvise, jam, write songs, talk and feel music, because the creative life is our way of life. We want to share the sounds and friendships that are our music, our health and vividness, with all curious listeners.”
Cole Pulice’s If I Don’t See you In The Future, I’ll See You In The Pasture is the piece that got the most prominence in the Longform Editions series. It was a gift. As the idea for Residence bubbled around in my head in a very loose and baggy fashion, it felt natural to ask for Cole’s thoughts. Their interest was immediately piqued in the most heartening and warming way. Cole told me Residence felt like “the spiritual successor to Longform Editions”. They spoke about the chance to meditate more deeply on music and communicate more directly with listeners about their work. They mentioned how the artist notes accompanying each Longform Editions piece were a revelation, removed from the wearying press cycle in music, and that Residence could expand on that premise. Moreover, Residence is an exciting means to create something singular and grand:
“I will be working on a new longform composition that is a contemplation on queer spirituality, memory, love and grief, and threads of lineage. This piece will weave together new work with sounds drawn from across timelines and formats - field recordings, personal recordings and archival recordings - alongside the instrumentation that has been a core focus for my work and explorations. This project is one I hold close to my heart, and is one I have been thinking about and wanting to develop for several years now. Residence presents the perfect opportunity to finally bring this project to life, unencumbered by the frameworks around traditional album workflow, length, structure, and format. Leading up to this longform piece, I will also be creating recordings of new experimentations and collaborations to share.”
Cole, Mari and Wendy graciously workshopped Residence into being. Having them take part makes it a dream run from the beginning.
Residence is, in itself, an experiment. Like Longform Editions, it is open-ended in nature, determined by possibility. We hope you’ll join us.
Thank you.
Andrew

A note about First Impressions as this Substacks transfers to Residence. The newsletter I created here came to a stop with a new work role and other vagaries of life. Apart from being the Residence conduit, I hope to maintain a looser format around music I’d love to share thoughts about. The name and link to ths Substack will change to reflect the Residence project. Thank you to everyone who has asked about First Impressions as well as your thoughts, comments and support over its time.

Andrew Khedoori was the curator of Longform Editions, 2018 - 2025.
Thank you to Mark Gowing for the Residence logo and his continual encouragement and support.

Super excited to follow along with this project! Really fun and interesting model. Best of luck to you, Cole, and Mari!
Great news, and you couldn't have picked better artists with which to begin
